Happy November – it’s Nanowrimo!

November 2nd, 2008

Last night a couple of friends and I gathered for a big bonfire on the beach, complete with hot dogs, smores, and a conversation about all things writing. One of my friends reminded me of the fact that it’s November. You might think this would be fairly obvious, what with Halloween drawn to a close and the time changes, but with all the craziness of the past few weeks I forgot about the important thing that the start of November signals: Nanowrimo. Essentially this is National Novel Writing Month, and a lovely bunch of writers got together in 1999 and decided to stop procrastinating and start writing. They formed an online community where the goal is to start (and complete!) a brand new 50,000 word novel between November 1st and 30th. It’s a great way to focus on deadlines and put a bunch of words on paper without nitpicking and worrying about quality. A bunch of Nanowrimo novels have been published, and the contest is a great motivator. I am a day behind the times, but if you’re interested, check it out. Since I’m in the throes of writing my YA manuscript, I’m going to focus on finishing that this month. And since it’s a rainy day in LA, I’ve got a nice big chunk of time to get working. I’ll keep you posted on my progress!
